The 3-strand braid is the most common of all the braid hairstyles! It is easy to do and does not take much time.

How to Do a 3-Strand Hairstyles

  1. Divide your hair into three sections – ‘1’, ‘2’ and ‘3’.
  2. Cross section ‘1’, over section ‘2’, so that section ‘1’ is now in the center.
  3. In a similar way, cross section ‘3’, over section ‘1’. Now, section ‘3’ is in the center.
  4. Rename the sections ‘1’, ‘2’ and ‘3’, in order and re-braid it!
  5. Once you reach the end, secure it with an elastic band.

The trick with this braid is to alternate bringing the left and right section over the center section.

2. Fishtail Braid Hairstyle

If you want a funky new look, then opt for this braid! Although it is a little more time-consuming, it is well worth the pain!

How to Do a Fishtail Braid Hairstyles 

  1. Divide your hair into two sections.
  2. Taking a little bit from the outer side of section ‘1’, cross it over to section ‘2’.
  3. Similarly, take a little bit from the outer side of section ‘2’ and cross it over to section ‘1’.
  4. Repeat till you reach the end, and then secure it with an elastic band.

The trick with this braid is to pick small sections of hair to cross over. The smaller the sections, the better the look!

The French braid hairstyle is a little more tricky, but looks elegant and classy when done the right way! It looks great on both long hair and short hair!

How to Do a French Braid Hairstyles 

  1. Start at the top of your head and move downward as the braid progress.
  2. Begin with a simple 3-strand braid, choosing a small portion at the center of your head.
  3. Once you reach step 4 of the braid, while crossing section ‘1’ over to the center, pick up a little hair from the side of your head and add it to section ‘1’.
  4. Once again, while crossing section ‘3’ over to the center, pick up a little hair from the side of your hair and add it to section ’3’.
  5. Continue to do this, adding more hair to the braid as you progress.
  6. Once you reach the base of your neck, all your hair should be incorporated into the braid.
  7. Continue to braid the hair in a simple 3-strand method, or secure it with an elastic at the nape of your neck.

The trick with this braid hairstyle is to divide the sections equally on both sides, for a more even look.

4. Dutch Braid Hairstyle

The dutch braid is one of the more popular braid hairstyles that are trending right now. It looks great as a single braid hairstyle, or, as is trending, as two braids down the sides of the head.

How to Do a Dutch Braid Hairstyles

  1. The dutch braid works on the same principle as the French Braid but, instead of crossing the braid OVER to the center, we will be crossing the hair UNDER.
  2. So, Start at the top of your head and move downward as the braid progress.
  3. Begin with a simple 3-strand braid, choosing a small portion at the center of your head.
  4. Begin braiding your hair, crossing it UNDER this time.
  5. Once you reach step 4 of the braid, while crossing section ‘1’ under to the center, pick up a little hair from the side of your head and add it to section ‘1’.
  6. Once again, while crossing section ‘3’ under to the center, pick up a little hair from the side of your hair and add it to section ’3’.
  7. Continue to do this, adding more hair to the braid.
  8. Once you reach the nape of your neck, you can continue braiding it as usual (keeping it overlapping under the hair), or you can secure it with an elastic band.

For a fuller look, gently pull on the braid to make your hair look fuller. This particular braid hairstyle also looks great as a side swept braid.

The milkmaid braid is a very popular updo hairstyle, adorned by many celebrities on the red carpet! It is easy to do and looks amazing. This is a perfect braid hairstyle for long hair!

How to Do a Milkmaid Braid Hairstyles

  1. Braid your hair into two pigtails following the same pattern as a 3-strand braid, or for a funkier look try fishtail braids.
  2. Make sure to braid your hair right down to the end.
  3. Once you’re done braiding your hair, cross the braids over the crown of your hair.
  4. Use bobby pins to pin them into place!
  5. Tuck the ends of the each braid under the other braid.

The waterfall braid is a fun braid hairstyle that can be combined with other braid hairstyles. It is easy to do and is a great way to let your hair down while keeping your hair out of your face!

How to Do a Waterfall Braid Hairstyles

  1. Begin at your hairline, sectioning your hair into three sections.
  2. Cross section ‘1’ over section ‘2’.
  3. Then, cross sections ‘3’ over section ‘1’.
  4. Cross section ‘2’ over section ‘3’ and under section ‘1’, allowing it to blend in with the rest of your hair.
  5. Pick up about the same amount of hair that you had in section ‘2’, from the crown of your hair and cross it over section ’3’.
  6. This new section becomes your section ‘2’.
  7. Continue the braid, allowing the sections crossing over from the crown to fall down, replacing the with fresh sections of hair from the crown.

You can either braid it right across, securing it with bobby pins or braid it half way through from both sides and secure it in the center with an elastic in the center. Once you are used to the braid, you can also try adding a fishtail braid or a 3-strand braid at the joining of the waterfall braid.

8. Ladder Braid Hairstyle

The ladder braid hairstyles is generally used at proms and weddings but, this braid is very easy to do and does not take very long!

How to Do a Ladder Braid Hairstyles

  1. Begin by picking a small piece of hair from your hairline to act as your main braid.
  2. Start with a simple 3-strand braid.
  3. Much like how you would incorporate hair into a dutch braid, add small sections of hair into the braid (from the underneath of the braid), allowing the added section to remain loose to create a ladder effect.

Generally, the sections are incorporated every alternate time and only on one side. You can pull on the strands of hair added to the braid to give a more even ladder look.

A more advanced look would be the combination of the waterfall braid, incorporated with a ladder braid hairstyles, to create a feather waterfall braid!

9. Infinity Braid Hairstyle

The infinity braid is much like a fishtail braid but has a more evened out look while the fishtail braid has a slanted effect.

  1. Divide your hair into two sections.
  2. Taking a piece of hair from the outer side of section ‘1’, cross it over to section ‘2’, bringing it under and around section ‘2’ and back into its original section.

  4. Continue to do so, until you run out of hair, then simply pick a little bit of hair from whichever section you are at, incorporate it into the previous strand and continue making the infinity symbol.
  5. Once you reach the end, secure it with an elastic band.

The trick with this braid hairstyles is to make sure that it is tight, or it will unravel!

The rope braid hairstyles is a little more tricky but, is great for a day at the mall. It can be dressed up for a more feminine approach or it can be used as a more workout level approach.

How to Do a Rope Braid Hairstyles

  1. Begin with two sections of hair.
  2. Twist both sections counter-clockwise, separately.
  3. Make sure that your twisted sections are nice and tight or it will unravel.
  4. Take both sections and cross them over clockwise till the end.

The important thing with this braid is to remember that while crossing both sections over, hands with change and the twist will probably loosen. Make sure that the twist remains tight by re-twisting the sections. Also, while twisting both sections together, make sure that the twist is tight there as well!
