1. Shaving Right
It is always important to shave in the same direction in which the hair grows. Not following this is one of the main reasons for ingrown hair. Also, make sure that you shave with a lot of care and do not apply too much pressure on the skin. This ensures that you don’t cut yourself as this could also lead to in growth of hair.
2. High-Quality Wax
Avoid using a low-quality wax while waxing, just to save a few extra bucks. Low-quality wax doesn’t grab the hair properly during waxing leading to broken hair being left behind in the skin. This could cause ingrown hair. So, make sure that you use a good quality wax for hair removal.
3. Skin Exfoliation
Exfoliating your skin every now and then, using a soft brush or scrub can help you remove the dead skin. This, in turn, will allow the hair to make its way out of the skin.
4. Changing the Blades
Whether you use a shaver, a traditional razor or an epilator to remove unwanted hair, it is important that you change the blades at regular intervals. This ensures that the hair is removed properly and does not cause ingrown hair.
Home Remedies for Controlling Ingrown Hair
There are a number of chemical-based remedies to remove and control ingrown hair. However, these are not good for the skin. Making use of home remedies to control ingrown hair is effective and a much safer option. Take a look at some of these remedies.
Sugar is a natural scrub and can be used to gently exfoliate the skin to remove the dead cells and prevent ingrown hair.
- Take one cup of sugar, half cup of olive oil, ten drops of tea tree oil and ten drops of lavender oil.
- Mix these together to make a scrub.
- Store this in an airtight container.
- Apply the scrub on the area with ingrown hair and massage it in using circular motions of your fingers for about 2 minutes.
- Clean your skin with lukewarm water.
Repeat the process a couple of times a week.
Salt is also considered to be a great exfoliating agent. Additionally, it has anti-inflammatory powers that cure the pain and inflammation caused by ingrown hair. Take one cup of lukewarm water and add one and a half teaspoon of salt to it. Using a cotton ball, apply this on the area with ingrown hair. After a few minutes, clean it with water. Continue doing this twice a day till it is cleared.
Other than relieving pain, aspirin also works to reduce the pain caused by the inflammation. Also, it contains salicylic acid which works as an exfoliator and removes the dead skin.
- To one teaspoon of water, add two aspirin tablets and leave them there till they completely dissolve and form a paste.
- Add one teaspoon of honey to this and apply it on the area with ingrown hair.
- After ten minutes, clean the area with warm water. However, this remedy may not be good for people who have a very sensitive skin.
